New KIC Partnership Aims to Improve Survival of Transplanted Kidneys

16 January 2024

The survival of transplanted kidneys has hardly improved in the past 20 years. The Kidney Foundation and NWO want to change that and are joining forces within the new KIC partnership, where interdisciplinary innovation for the prevention and treatment of kidney transplant failure is central.

Despite promising technological developments, approximately 40% of transplanted donor kidneys will be lost due to rejection within 10 years. The call One kidney for life aims to enable the development of new therapies for the prevention and treatment of renal transplant failure. This improves graft survival and thus life expectancy and quality of life of kidney transplant patients. In the future, more patients on the resulting shorter waiting list will also have timely access to a kidney transplant.

Budget and lead time
The subsidy ceiling for this Call for proposals amounts to a total of € 2,665,775. A maximum of two applications are expected to be awarded within this Call for proposals. NWO finances a maximum of 90% of the total project size. Together, the co-financiers must raise a net minimum of 10% of the total budget for the application. The duration of the proposed project is a minimum of 4 years and a maximum of 5 years.

Interdisciplinary collaboration
The projects to be awarded are focused on research leading to biomedical breakthroughs. This complex challenge cannot be answered from one scientific discipline or from a scientific perspective alone. Graft failure is a multidisciplinary problem, requiring organizations and companies from different sectors to find a solution. This call for proposals is therefore aimed at collaboration between parties who expect to contribute to interdisciplinary research and innovative solutions for the prevention and treatment of kidney transplant failure. The social aspects (for example economic and ethical aspects, inclusivity, communication, behavior and autonomy of users) form an integral part of the development of the approach.

Matchmaking
On Thursday afternoon, February 15, 2024, NWO will organize a matchmaking event at the NWO Utrecht location for this call. NWO invites researchers, companies and social organizations to attend.
