Controversy in Indonesia vs Iraq Match at 2023 Asian Cup

Al Rayyan

Indonesian National team lost 1-3 to Irak on the first matchday Group D 2023 Asian Cup. Shin Tae-yong confirmed Iraq’s second goal was invalid.

Indonesia vs Iraq took place at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium, Monday (15/1/2024). The Garuda squad was broken through by Iraq first in the 17th minute through Mohanad Ali.

Marselino Ferdinan then brought Indonesia to equalize the score at 1-1 in the 37th minute. The score initially looked like it would last until halftime, but in fact it didn’t.

Iraq led 2-1 in injury time through Osama Rashid’s goal. This goal became a debate because previously there was chaos in the Indonesian penalty box and it smelled like offside.

VAR reviewed it to confirm it was Iraq’s second goal. In the second half, Indonesia could not add goals and instead conceded for the third time because of Aymen Hussein’s goal.

The result made Shin Tae-yong annoyed because Iraq’s controversial second goal changed the course of the match.

“I highlight Iraq’s second goal. It was 100 percent offside. That goal changed the situation,” said Shin in the post-match press conference attended by detikSport.

“It’s a shame that VAR was unable to work well in the Asian Cup,” emphasized the South Korean man.
