Why the Flu Can be Deadly for Children: Insights from Infectious Disease Doctor

Infectious disease doctor Andrei Pozdnyakov, in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta, explained why the flu can be deadly for children. One of the complications of the flu is swelling.

— One of the extremely dangerous complications of influenza is cerebral edema due to a hyperthermic reaction. Influenza can have immediate complications that appear very quickly against the background of severe toxicosis. This is a typical condition for the flu. Prolonged high temperature itself can cause vasospasm, damage to the vascular bed, and with influenza this can happen because the infection affects the blood vessels, and accordingly, pathological processes are triggered in various organs and tissues. The most dangerous are the brain, lungs and heart, – Andrey Pozdnyakov said.

The doctor also reminded that children should be routinely vaccinated according to indications from 6 months onwards annually.

Unfortunately, breastfeeding does not protect against the flu. Unlike other infections, after which an adult develops a fairly stable immunity and antibodies can be transmitted to the baby through breast milk, immunity against influenza is not stable even in adults. This is one of the reasons why vaccination is carried out regularly every year for both children and adults. – said the infectious disease doctor.

At the height of the season of respiratory infections, including influenza and coronavirus, you need to take care of yourself and protect your children.
