Russian Authorities Detain Student for Alleged Cooperation with Ukraine and Sabotage Plans

Since Russia’s repeated invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian authorities have detained a number of foreigners and Russian citizens for possible cooperation with Kyiv or planning attacks on army infrastructure.

The 20-year-old student was previously detained on suspicion of cooperation with a foreign country, the branch of the Russian Federal Security Service in Kurgan announced. “The defendant planned to sabotage military and social infrastructure facilities,” Russian news agencies said in a statement.

Russia’s Federal Security Service also alleged that the student planned to spread pro-Ukrainian propaganda on the Internet and divulge information about military and law enforcement activities in the region.

Russia has criminalized criticism of the military and detained or fined thousands of people who have condemned the war against Ukraine.
