Astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi has been appointed as the new Minister of Youth Affairs of the UAE. This was announced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.
Sultan Al Neyadi, 42, returned last September from a six-month mission to the International Space Station. Neyadi, who holds a doctorate in information technology, has served his country in the military and in space. Al Neyadi, who participated in more than 200 scientific experiments in space, holds the record for being the first Arab to perform a spacewalk and the longest-lived Arab in space.
In a message posted on XTwitter, Sheikh Mohammed said Al Neyadi had “served the country in the military and space fields and humanity in the field of science”. He added that public nominations played a role in the selection process and that Al Neyadi would “carry out scientific and space duties in addition to his new responsibilities”.
Other ministers who were newly elected and sworn in in the UAE are Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Prime Minister of the Ministry of Finance, Mohammed bin Mubarak Fadel Al Masroui, Minister of State for Defense, Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahaq Al Shamsi and Maryam bint Mohammed Al Muhairi have taken over as the head of the UAE President’s Office dealing with international affairs.
The new ministers were sworn in at a ceremony held at the Abu Dhabi Al Bahr Palace in front of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.
