NY Rangers Defeat Washington 2-1, Panarin Scores 400th Point in Club’s History

The Rangers laid the foundation for the victory in the opening period, in which they scored both goals. Artemij Panarin opened the scoring after only fifty seconds of the game from a quick counterattack with a shot from the left circle. The Russian attacker caught up with David Pastrňák in the productivity table, who was in third place before the match. Both have 59 points.

Panarin scored his 400th point in a Rangers jersey (127+273). He managed to collect them in 310 matches, no one was faster in the club’s history. Thanks to his productivity as well, Rangers lead the Metropolitan Division. “It’s great that he started shooting more. He has a top shot, placed. Some are just trying to hit the goal, but he’s one of those players who knows where to send the puck,” praised coach Peter Laviolette.

In the 20th minute, Alexis Lafreniére added to the goal. “Today we performed better than in previous matches, especially in defense. That’s why we won before. In the first place, the defense was responsible, and this resulted in chances in the attack,” added Lafreniére.

Kaapo Kakko returned to the Rangers lineup after a month and a half. But due to injury, the team is still missing Filip Chytil, who last played on November 2.

Washington, which played the second game in a row without the injured Alexander Ovechkin, only reduced the score at 31:03 with a goal by TJ Oshie. Then both goalkeepers excelled. Visiting Charlie Lindgren, for example, picked off Chris Kreider twice in a three-on-five weakening. On the other side, Igor Šestorkin stopped 24 of 25 shots.

In Toronto, the goals began to fall from the second period, and the home team led 1:0 and 2:1 after goals from Pontus Holmberg and Mitchell Marner, who scored his 600th point in the Maple Leafs jersey. He crossed the line in the 548th game, the fastest in the club’s history.

Detroit tied the game at 1-1 with Dylan Larkin’s shot and it was his third period. In its opening, Daniel Sprong converted a solo escape with a backhand loop, and at 58:20 Andrew Copp shot through a group of defending players from the left circle. For the goals from 2:1 to 2:3, Kämpf scored a negative point. Lucas Raymond sealed the win in a goalless Toronto game.

Detroit had beaten Los Angeles at home a day earlier, but the move to Toronto was complicated by weather and plane problems. That’s why the match started half an hour late. “We have had a unique 24 hours. It was crazy, but the guys handled it great. There are things you can’t control, but you can influence the performance and we did well for most of the game. It’s a good win,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. His charge Patrick Kane withdrew due to injury in the first period.
