Wind gusts of more than 200 km/h could hit the island. The population is called upon to remain confined and more than ten emergency accommodation centers have been opened. Meteorologists are paying attention to the progression of Cyclone Belal.
On the Reunion seafront, the first effects of Cyclone Belal are already being felt. On the afternoon of Sunday January 14, the island was in the grip of violent winds, rain and ever more impressive waves, which could reach eight meters on Monday January 15, the date on which the peak of the cyclone is expected, formed four days ago, between Madagascar and Reunion. The island has been placed on red alert.
An extremely rare level of risk
This Sunday morning, residents came to buy their last supplies, under the flood. They will then confine themselves until at least Tuesday. “You have to make reservations and anticipate”, smiles a resident. This level of risk is very rare in the region. Meteorologists compare this cyclone to the most devastating in the history of Reunion, such as those of 1989 or 1962. Jérôme Cerisier, meteorologist at weathersolution speaks of a “considerable potential for damage”. He adds that “the purple alert” could be “an option to consider”. In the event of a purple alert, no one can circulate in the streets, not even the Emergency Services. In addition to gusts of 200 km/h, heavy flooding is also expected.
