In a mob attack in the early hours of January 14, a 44-year-old man believed to be a prominent figure in the Athens nightlife scene was ambushed and fatally shot outside a gas station in the Neos Kosmos district of Athens.
Having previously been accused of leading an extortion ring, the victim, identified as Vangelis Z, narrowly survived an assassination attempt in 2018.
Law enforcement officials believe his killing is relevant to ongoing conflicts in the nightlife scene.
The assailants traveling in a jeep confronted him at the intersection of Franzi and Ilias Iliou streets in Neos Kosmos on Sunday. They opened fire through his car window and killed him on the spot.
The assailants’ car was later found completely charred on Athens Avenue in the Haidari district of western Athens.
Authorities are linking that incident to a foiled plot against the 44-year-old in June that involved a van loaded with weapons.
Investigations into the incident are currently underway.
