Today, January 14th (Sunday), after sunset, pay attention to the low sky in the southwest. The slender Moon and Saturn will appear close together. Where can you enjoy a celestial show?
The thin moon and Saturn are approaching
From the evening to early evening today, January 14th (Sunday), the slender Moon, age 3, and Saturn will be visible low in the southwest sky.
Look for Saturn when the sky gets dark, about an hour after sunset (sunset in Tokyo is 16:49). Today, the 14th (Sunday), a thin moon will be visible below Saturn.
Although it can be enjoyed with the naked eye, Saturn sets about three hours after sunset at the end of the viewing season. If you want to observe the moon’s craters and Saturn’s rings through an astronomical telescope, it would be best to arrive early.
Where can you enjoy the collaboration of the slender moon and Saturn?
Tonight (the 14th), many places on the Pacific coast from Okinawa and Kyushu to the southern part of Tohoku will have clear skies, so it looks like we’ll be able to enjoy a celestial show. On the other hand, the weather on the Japan Sea side is downhill. There will be snow and rain on the Sea of Japan side of northern Japan, and clouds will spread over Hokuriku and the shadows of the mountains, with rain and thunderstorms starting late at night. Unfortunately, it looks like the weather will be bad for astronomical observation.
The next approach will be on February 11th.
