Dijon (AFP) – Prime Minister Gabriel Attal estimated on Saturday in Dijon that there was “a lot of hypocrisy” in the comments concerning his Minister of Education Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, at the center of a controversy after having explained that she had educated her children in the private sector due to the absence of teachers who had not been replaced in the public sector.

“The minister spoke transparently about the choices she made (…). As for the question of unreplaced absences, I find that there is a lot of hypocrisy among certain commentators or among certain politicians”, explained the Prime Minister, during a trip on the theme of the hospital to Dijon.
“You just need to talk with French people, with parents of students, to understand that this question is an important issue,” he added.
The head of government, who was still Minister of Education a few days ago, said he had taken the subject “head on”, for example “by asking that teacher training now take place outside the class time”.
The teaching pact also makes it possible to better pay teachers who carry out replacement missions: “50% more remuneration when you replace an absent colleague”. “We are rolling up our sleeves on this subject,” argued Mr. Attal, highlighting positive effects: “between September and December 2023, there were three times more absences replaced than between September and December 2022.
Ms. Oudéa-Castéra will have to “continue this action” and act “for the attractiveness of the teaching profession”, in order to compensate for the “lack of replacements”. A consultation launched by him in September “must be completed within a month, so that we can present a plan in the coming weeks and months,” he said.
Mr. Attal also advocated for the Minister of Labor, Health and Solidarity Catherine Vautrin, who was at his side, and whose positions hostile to marriage for all have been recalled in recent days.
“Everyone knows me, everyone knows what my life is like,” said the Prime Minister, himself openly homosexual.
“Catherine Vautrin (…) belongs to a majority resolutely committed against discrimination. A majority which allowed the opening of PMA to female couples (…) We are a government which will continue to act against discrimination , against homophobia and in favor of the rights of all”, affirmed Mr. Attal, saying he was “happy and proud” that Ms. Vautrin was part of his government and defending the possibility for everyone to “change their mind”.
