Maxim Busel: Behind the Scenes of Latvia’s Talented, Charming, and Strong Men

It is said that men reveal their true nature in a bit of shameless simplicity. Then NRA.lv Lifestyle will go on this expedition to discover what is hidden behind Latvia’s talented, charming and strong men. Questions that are a bit reminiscent of the old, good, but already forgotten diaries, where everyone could be himself. To the very depths of the heart.

The most relevant event of Maxim Busel this year is the upcoming new production: the rock opera “Sphinx”, which will premiere on February 22. The music of Jānis Lūsēns and the poetry of Māras Zālīte will be revived in the rock opera. It will be a musical story about the suggestive fate of the famous seer Eugene Fink. “I am honored to play the main role under the direction of Rezia Kalniņa. I am currently rehearsing and now researching all of this in detail. It is important to me that we succeed in this work. The main role has been assigned, now it will be necessary to justify it,” says the actor.

Favorite childhood memory?

I have two favorite childhood memories. And they are related to mom. It was a hot summer day and my mother took me to kindergarten, she had beautiful high-heeled shoes and it was so hot that she left holes, dots on the asphalt with her shoes.

The asphalt had melted and I was in shock. I was surprised by the child’s eyes. It seemed that mom was walking so confidently and strongly that even on the asphalt there were footprints behind her.

I remember the first time I was on the carousels. I was so excited that I felt like I was flying in the sky. And mom is like that – beautiful, waving to me and standing, her hair was waving so beautifully in the wind. My mom was always a princess, just like from Disney movies.

When I grow up I…?

I don’t even know why, but I always said I was going to be a wizard. I still remember that when I was a child I said that I would sell flowers. I will be a seller of a flower shop. But I was sure about the wizard because I wanted to do magic. My family now says I’m almost a magician because acting is similar.

Or in childhood pot gas?

As a child, I was too correct. My mom, despite being very young when I was born, only 21 years old, was also strict. I had discipline at home. I remember one joke, when my mother was sleeping, I took the cigarettes, took the tobacco out of them and poured cold water over them.

I wanted to make tea from them, but it didn’t taste good. And when mom woke up, of course, she was in shock. I don’t know why I did that, but the thought came into the child’s mind that there might be tea, because I had seen that teas have different leaves. However, the thought was guided by good intentions. I just wanted to make tea for mom for breakfast.

When was the last time you peed?

I don’t remember. Probably when I was little!

A subject of study that provided toothache?

It was math, but the most interesting thing is that I was in a class with a math bias. It was difficult for me. I can tell by my profession now that mathematics was not my subject.

Favorite Latvian holiday?

Ligo, as well as Song and Dance Festival. If you have to name one, it’s the Ligo Festival because it’s every year, which is nice. Christmas is also international. In addition, I tell everyone one thing about them – did you know that the first fir tree in the world was in Riga. I feel honored by this fact.

Ifavorite Latvian actress and why?

If I say only one, the others will be offended. You have to think. Not easy. Of course, there are many good actresses. Thank God, Latvia is rich in actresses…

I will say Sandra Kļaviņa, because she surprises and inspires me the most. Despite the role she has, small, big, she plays them powerfully. She gives her all in every role she plays.

And it is visible. How her eyes burn! She has put her rich professional spectrum, her emotional world, the world of feelings, which is infinite. She shares and does not feel sorry for herself.

What quality do you respect in those closest to you?

Understanding. What is happiness? When you are understood! It’s for real. And when it’s mutual, then it’s love. Everything else starts from understanding.

The best salary?

The best salary is when you appreciate. In the theater it is manifested by applause. When I hear applause and emotions after my big roles in performances, then at that moment it becomes clear that everything was not in vain.

I gave my all on stage. And sometimes it is difficult, but the stage saves at that moment. There is no better salary than assessment. And not even when they say, Maxim, you were a genius, no. For example, when I am offered the next job and invited. It’s the coolest thing because I realize that I’ve done something that makes me want to be seen elsewhere. I continue to develop.

What does it mean to you to be on stage?

The stage means everything to me! Everything is possible there. The stage revives me. And very often it is like therapy. I can both disconnect from the world and at the same time talk to or about the world.

Especially today, looking at what is happening in the world, it is very important to talk about the current situation in order to be able to change for the better, sometimes to educate spiritually… At the same time, there are also performances when the stage is like a salvation – both for me and for the audience , because for a moment it is possible to disconnect from real life in order to touch something eternal.

What is the crust of the acting profession?

This work does not accept lies. You can’t lie to the audience, you have to be true and honest, real. The profession of an actor also requires not to feel sorry for yourself. I don’t feel sorry for myself, which is not right, so I have health problems from time to time, because it is extreme and there are overloads.

The profession of an actor is not something romantic, but sometimes this profession is romanticized. If you want to be in demand, you must be mobile – you must be able to speak, you must be thoughtful, you must be able to sing and dance. You need to take care of yourself to look good, you need to be in shape.

It is also necessary to get educated. Continuous development is required. This profession requires honest dedication.

What do you do when everything seems to be too much? How to avoid burnout?

I’m not talented here. I am a workaholic and cannot give up work. If everything burns, then I refuse. What do I do when it’s all too much? When there is only one day – then I go to the SPA, massage, because it helps me regain my strength. When you have more time, it is best to rehabilitate in nature.

Regular meditation with breathing exercises helps to bring you back to yourself. It is also very important for me to be alone, with myself, every now and then, because it is the most precious time for me to return to myself. For example, I get invited there, there, there, but when I overwork at times, the quality is lost, I lose myself, but I need time for myself. Filming, rehearsals, events and it all goes round and round. Spending time with loved ones also helps to ground yourself.

The day that changed your life forever?

When, without finishing school, because it was the 11th grade, I was immediately taken to an acting course prepared by Mikhail Chekhov for the Riga Russian Theater. It changed my life.

Also the day when we won “Dancing with the Stars” together with Liza Mania. I didn’t believe it. Yes, we gave our all, but the moment we won, I couldn’t believe it.

For the first time something like this happened to me in my life. It was a big race, we didn’t expect to win. After that, a different path to popularity began. And as a workaholic, I was offered many different projects and jobs.

The most beautiful words you have dedicated to someone?

I love you! Thank you for being the only one. It means a lot to me. I have said such words once.

Your strength when the word “can’t” makes itself felt?

When I studied acting, the masters said: “There is no such thing as ‘can’t’ and ‘don’t understand’, if you want, you can.” It’s rare that I can’t. Then when I got to the hospital with a temperature of 40 degrees, only then I could not do anything else, because then I had to recover. My strength is purpose. When you have a goal, you have motivation.

Favorite clothings winter?

A hat. I must not forget that.

Are you critical of yourself?

Oh yes! My problem is that I’m a perfectionist, which doesn’t help me at all. There are also wonderful moments when I talk to my perfectionist and let myself, which is rare, be as it is, when I have done my best. I am self-critical of myself. And it’s not good.

Do you have a lucky charm?

What I am learning and have learned. I don’t want to get attached to things because then I will become addicted. That is why my amulet is most likely people, thoughts, movies. It is nothing physical. My amulet is in my heart and head.

How to you spent the warmest holidays of 2023 – Christmas?

With family, girlfriend and girlfriend’s family. It was beautiful, because we also invited my colleague and friend from the theater, who moved to Latvia because of the war. We wanted his first Christmas in Latvia to be a bright holiday and leave a good impression.

Christmas is all about sharing the light. The warm feeling must be shared. And we succeeded. I was most pleased that we shared Christmas traditions – the festive table, gifts, along with Harry Potter movies and Christmas carols.

Of course, there are also cordial conversations and homemade gingerbread. I am used to these traditions and therefore look forward to them every year. It is important for me to have a cozy celebration. And my friend, colleague was touched. I liked it the most. Such a celebration should be, then it makes sense. A holiday that enriches the heart.

The most beautiful song to listen to more than seven times?

It is not easy because there are many songs. I choose “Lullaby Love” by Roo Pane.

Your most precious passed insight of the year?

I have come to realize that the key is in dialogue. You have to be able to speak, communicate. Don’t be afraid to speak up. It is important to be honest, to openly say how you feel, what you want. Especially with those on whom everything depends. Not only to build a dialogue, but to learn to speak. If people in the world were able to really talk, there would be no wars.

What does it mean here leave your initials in the cinema square?

If it is a valuable work that will help someone understand something, change something for the better, then I can say that my life goal will be achieved, because then I will have left something valuable to the world.

How did life change after winning “Dancing with the Stars”?

Now I try to deal with all the offers that come, but I don’t have time and strength for all of them. Thank God it has because I love it. I try to combine my career with a project for new offers.

How to buy Miera?

The haven of peace for me is nature. Italian nature. Sounds wonderful. Summer to be warm, fresh air, because nature gives life.

A wish for readers 2024. year?

Take care of yourself, because when you take care of yourself, your health, you will take care of your loved ones at the same time. One depends on the other. Also, so that the dialogue is not only with a partner, wife, husband, the closest person, but with oneself. It is important. Hear yourself. And care.
