TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Member of the DPD RI from Bali, Arya Wedakarna reported by the Daily Chair of Legal Affairs of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Bali, Agus Samijaya and 25 Islamic Community Organizations regarding alleged SARA cases. Arya was reported on suspicion of religious blasphemy under the Hate Speech article Article 45A Paragraph (2) of the Republic of Indonesia Law Number 19 of 2016 concerning Amendments to the Republic of Indonesia Law Number 11 of 2008 concerning Electronic Information and Transactions and/or Article 156 of the Criminal Code and Article 156 Paragraph (1) of the Criminal Code.
“Today we are reporting alleged criminal acts of religious blasphemy and hate speech related to SARA. This is a mandate from a joint meeting with the Bali Province MUI and 25 Islamic Mass Organizations and the meeting agreed that we make a criminal report to Bareskrim and a complaint to the PK DPD RI,” said Agus when met after making a report at Bareskrim Polri on Friday, January 12 2024.
Regarding this case, attorney MUI BaliAzam Khan said that this legal step was taken by them as a response to an important problem that had spread among society, where the turmoil between Hindus and Muslims continued to escalate due to the actions of one person.
This is the aftermath of a viral video showing Arya asking that the welcoming staff or frontliners should be local sons and daughters who do not wear head coverings. Arya’s statement invited a public reaction, so that around 200 Balinese Muslims held a demonstration to demand his accountability.
Previously, member of the Regional Representative Council Shri I Gusti Ngurah Arya Wedakarna Mahendradatta Wedasteraputra Suyasa III or better known as Arya Wedakarna alias AWK was in the public spotlight. In the viral video, Arya is known to have requested that the welcoming staff or frontliners should be local men and women who do not wear head coverings. This was conveyed at a meeting of Committee I DPD RI together with officials from Ngurah Rai Airport, the Customs and Excise Regional Office (Kanwil), and related agencies at Ngurah Rai Airport, on Friday, December 29 2023.
