Großröhrsdorf Town Church Secured with Emergency Roof After Devastating Fire

The Großröhrsdorf town church, which was badly damaged by fire, is being secured with an emergency roof. Some preparations are necessary for the work.

After the devastating fire at the Großröhrsdorf town church near Dresden, the ruins of the church are to receive a temporary roof. This will be installed from January 22nd “depending on the weather and wind”, as the board and pastor announced on the Protestant parish’s homepage. By pruning the crowns and felling severely damaged trees in the area around the Protestant church, space will initially be created for scaffolding around the ruins.

The nave of the baroque church was largely burned out on the night of August 4th last year. A week later, a man from a village surrounding the small town around 25 kilometers east of Dresden was arrested. He confessed to setting the fire and is in custody. At the end of the year, charges of aggravated arson were brought against the 41-year-old. He is then accused of throwing a bottle filled with gasoline through a window and intentionally setting the building on fire.

The flames destroyed the roof structure and the interior of the nave and cut off the bell tower, which was once 50 meters high and visible from afar. Many historical art treasures and parts of the architecture have been lost, and nothing was found even in the rubble. In August, the church council decided to build a new church on the same site, incorporating the historical remains. Donations that have been received by the community since the disaster will also be used for this purpose. As of January 12th it was 427,300 euros.
