Three-time Olympic champion Ledecká drove the least successful downhill of the season. So far she was sixteenth in Val d’Isere and twenty-second in St. Moritz.
“I think it was definitely better than the training run I had here two days ago. I’m glad that I improved,” said Ledecká, who was 35th in Thursday’s training.
“Anyway, I rode pretty well. I think it’s roughly the ride I’m trained for. I’ll still need to ride a bit more in the downhills to have more confidence in myself and be able to push harder. But I think I’ve done it now as much as possible to get to the finish line as quickly as possible. This is what I’m up to now,” she added.
Twenty-eight-year-old Ledecká took to the track with starting number 20 just after the Norwegian Kajsa Vickhoff Lie fell in front of her after a high-speed jump. The second woman from Friday’s super-G skied to the finish line after a short break.
Ledecká took up a deficit of 71 hundredths in the first part of the course, and her loss continued to grow. She reached the finish line in 17th place, but later dropped another seven places. She was 1.23 seconds away from the top ten.
“The coaches called me at the finish line to see if I had a headwind at the top. I can’t judge that. I know it was windy in the upper passage, it’s just hard to say who had more and who less,” said Ledecká.
“I know that Kajsa fell in front of me, so I had a break at the top for a while, which wasn’t very pleasant because I was quite cold. But that’s part of the sport and above all I hope she’s fine. From what I saw of her at the finish line, it looked like nothing major had happened. That’s the most important thing. I’m already looking forward to tomorrow and we’ll see how it goes,” Ledecká added.
Thirty-one-year-old Goggia took her 24th victory in the World Cup and shares with Federica Brignone the post of the most successful Italian woman in history. She triumphed in the downhill for the eighteenth time and consolidated her lead in the standings of the discipline.
As in Friday’s super giant slalom, American Mikaela Shiffrin was absent from the start. The leading woman in the World Cup standings is recovering from illness.
