Turkey’s official TRT television station said that a Turkish court on Friday canceled an arrest warrant against the son of the Somali president after he appeared before a court in a case related to an accident in a diplomatic car he was driving.
Mohamed Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the son of the Somali president, was driving a car belonging to the Somali consulate on November 30 when his car collided with a motorcycle delivering orders in central Istanbul. The delivery worker was seriously injured in the incident, which was recorded on surveillance cameras.
Mahmoud left the country on December 2, after a police interrogation. A warrant was issued for his arrest after the delivery worker died in the hospital on December 6.
Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tun said last month that he expected Mahmoud to return to Turkey to participate in the case before the judiciary.
TRT said that Mahmoud came to Istanbul and appeared before the court on Friday afternoon, and that he repeated his previous defense in the session. Mahmoud previously told the Public Prosecutor that the motorcycle driver was responsible for the accident.
The court ruled to cancel Mahmoud’s arrest order and to exempt him from attending the upcoming sessions in the case, the sessions of which will continue.
The prosecution is demanding that Mahmoud be imprisoned for up to six years on charges of “causing death as a result of negligence.”
