Asturian Livestock Farmers Urged to Vaccinate Cattle Against Bluetongue Disease

Rocio Huerta, general director of Livestock and Agrarian Health, encourages all Asturian livestock farmers to vaccinate their cattle against bluetongue disease, which has caused the Principality to be declared a restricted zone since last November 10, after some cases were detected. . Huerta wants to clear up any doubts about vaccinating livestock – the target population in Asturias is 320,000 cows and 60,000 sheep – after some organization like Usaga has shown some distrust. The director understands that some professionals have thought about 2008 and “the problems associated with the vaccine then. But everything is moving forward and we must trust the Spanish Medicines Agency, which has authorized and verified them.

Thus, this Thursday the “massive and free” vaccination began in the Principality. Rocío Huerta herself traveled to a farm in Siero to continue the application of the first doses. The campaign will last more than three months, coinciding with the beginning of the period of activity (around May) of the culicoides mosquito that causes bluetongue, a viral disease that affects cattle and sheep, but in no case humans.

The Ministry of Rural Affairs will apply prophylaxis against serotypes 4 and 8 to the herd of sheep and cattle over three months old on all farms. The campaign has begun in the livestock farms where sanitation began on Monday, which will be followed by the rest of the farms, according to a new calendar.

Continuity

Subsequently, a continuity campaign will begin that will consist of applying prophylaxis to all cattle and sheep over three months of age that have not been vaccinated before for different reasons. For this task, Medio Rural will have an operation made up of its own personnel who will act in an orderly and staggered manner.

For an animal to be considered correctly vaccinated, it must have the complete schedule. In the case of cattle, two doses are necessary and the second must be administered between 21 and 28 days after the first. Sheep should only receive one dose. In both cases, the animals must be revaccinated annually.
