Dresden. The next BennoKolleg event will take place on Thursday, January 18th, 2024. Prof. Dr. George Essen, Chair of Systematic Theology at the Humboldt University in Berlin and Director of Studies at the Central Institute for Catholic Theology (IKT) there, will give a lecture on the topic “Between support and attitude. The Challenges of the Christian Faith”.

Many hope that their faith will provide support in these radically changing times, but the Catholic Church in Germany is currently in crisis: falling membership numbers, the abuse scandal and socio-political positions that no longer appeal to the lifestyle of urban and young people. Modernization seems overdue, especially when it comes to dealing with queerness, the role of women and celibacy.

The Christian faith, with the idea of God, offers an option for freedom that can strengthen people. But he also provokes questions about one’s own life because he demands an attitude – for faith and life in family and society.

What potential does the Christian faith have for the individual? And how did it succeed in making it socially oriented, cosmopolitan, and sensitive to culture, art and politics? And how do Christian faith and practical reason come together in the 21st century?
