Babies and young children can also receive an oral vaccine against rotavirus in Venlo. This cause of stomach flu causes many cases of dehydration throughout the Netherlands.
The vaccination is therefore not in injection form, but will be administered orally through a sugary drink. The GGD North Limburg will start the campaign at the beginning of March.
Stomach flu
“The rotavirus causes typical stomach flu symptoms,” says pediatrician Caro Theunissen of VieCuri. ‘Think of fever, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. That can cause serious dehydration.’ This does not only apply to children, Theunissen knows. Yet she often sees that the first exposure to the virus is the most severe. ‘It is precisely those little ones who are the most sensitive to it, because the body does not yet recognize the virus. So that is exactly the risk group you want to protect with the vaccination.’ In the Netherlands, five to six children still die every year from the effects of the virus.
We will be able to prevent a lot of recordings with this.

No shot
“It is a drink that you give to the child and is therefore not painful,” says the pediatrician. ‘It appears to be very effective in the countries around us. So we will also be able to prevent a lot of admissions with it.’ However, closely monitoring someone with stomach flu is still important, especially in young children. ‘Is your child drowsy, can’t keep anything down and can’t urinate? Then always come back.’
