“Colao 2” premiere in New York
‘Colao 2’, the sequel to the successful Caribbean romantic comedy ‘Colao’, opens this Friday, January 12 in New York theaters. Nashla Bogaert and Manny Pérez reprise their roles as Antonio and Laura, alongside popular Dominican comedians, Raymond and Miguel. Directed by Frank Perozo and produced by Kendy Yanoreth together with Spanglish Movies, the story picks up when after six years together, Antonio and Laura face a crisis in their relationship that threatens to separate them. Colao 2 follows the couple’s ups and downs as they try to resolve their problems. Audiences will be able to witness the humor and romance that made the original a success. Dance Festival at the Guggenheim
‘Works & Process at the Guggenheim’ presents the Underground Uptown Dance Festival, a gathering of street and social dance taking place in the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed underground theater at the Guggenheim, January 10-16, and at the Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall this Friday, January 12. Inspired by the circular architecture of the Guggenheim, the circles present in street dance, and the social environments where these artistic traditions germinated, the works presented intertwine audiences and artists. These commissions seek to amplify the innate qualities of dance to physically connect and facilitate the embodiment of joy and community. At the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (Peter B. Children’s concert at Carnegie Hall
This Saturday, January 13, from 12:00 to 3:00 pm, children will sing and dance to music from around the world as the popular “Musical Explorers” family concerts return to Carnegie Hall. Guitarist, composer and singer Yasser Tejeda will share his Dominican roots and perform for children ages 4 to 8 and their families. These highly interactive concerts awaken curiosity in the little ones, while they learn about different cultures and traditions. In addition to Dominican roots music, the January concerts will feature the sounds of Mele Hawai’i, traditional Hawaiian music, led by Grammy winner Kalani Pe’a, and Iraqi folk music with violinist and singer Layth Sidiq. Round table on Sophie Rivera
This Saturday, January 13, En Foco y Pregones/Puerto Rican Traveling Theater present “Sophie Rivera: Más Allá de la Lente,” a roundtable that highlights the life and legacy of Puerto Rican photographer Sophie Rivera. The discussion is an initiative of the Nueva Luz Study Center (NLSC) and is part of En Foco’s efforts to preserve the culture and legacy of diasporic artists dedicated to the lens. The panel will feature the participation of Marisol Díaz-Gordon, Rocio Aranda-Alvarado and Nina Kuo. The discussion is linked to the current exhibition, “Boricua lens: Portraits of Sophie Rivera,” which is on display at Pregones/PRTT until April 4 and virtually at www.enfoco.org. Closing of the Botanical Garden train exhibition
The traditional Holiday Train Show The New York Botanical Garden will end its season next Tuesday, January 16. The exhibit features model trains passing through representations of nearly 200 replicas of New York landmarks, each recreated with bark, twigs, acorns, leaves, cinnamon sticks and other natural materials at NYBG’s Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. Additionally, the final night of NYBG GLOW, an outdoor light display in the forest, will take place this Saturday, January 13. More information: https://www.nybg.org.

Free days at the Whitney Museum
This Sunday, January 14, the Whitney Museum of American Art will host its first free ‘Second Sundays’ program, featuring live musical performances, art activities for all ages, and tours celebrating the successful exhibition Henry Taylor: B Side and the work of notable artists such as Ruth Asawa and Sadie Barnette. At 11:30 am and 1:00 pm, artists from Jazz at Lincoln Center will perform a concert specially designed for children, exploring how African American artists and their experiences have profoundly shaped music in the United States. Russian theater in New York
Krymov Lab NYC kicked off its limited presentation of Pushkin’s celebrated interpretation of Eugene Onegin, “In Our Own Words” by Russian director Dmitry Krimov, currently residing and creating in exile in New York. In the production, four Russian immigrants desperately try to communicate the value of an untranslatable classic to a New York audience. In the midst of the atrocities of war, is there still room in today’s world for Dostoevsky, for Tchaikovsky, for Pushkin? Can beauty and intellect survive such horrors? And should they? Following on the heels of the opening series at David Geffen Hall and an all-night outdoor celebration as part of Summer for the City in 2022 and 2023, globalFEST’s cultural catalysts return to Lincoln Center this Sunday for another evening of musical discovery. The ‘NYC Winter Outing 2024’ program starts
The New York City Tourism and Convention Bureau announced the start of reservations for the new season of NYC Winter Outing 2024, presented by Mastercard. The program will run from January 16 to February 4, offering discounts on experiences in all five boroughs, including NYC Restaurant Week menus at more than 600 restaurants; 2-for-1 tickets to 23 Broadway shows at NYC Broadway Week; and 2-for-1 tickets to over 60 museums, attractions, tours and performing arts for NYC Must-See Week. NYC Hotel Week, which is part of NYC Winter Outing, is now underway, offering 24% off standard rates at over 160 hotels through February 4. Free photography workshop in Spanish
The Noguchi Museum in Queens, along with Project Luz, is offering a free photography workshop in Spanish for adults (ages 16 and up). Artist Sol Aramendi will guide participants in basic photography and video techniques, as well as image composition. Taking inspiration from the stone sculptures of Isamu Noguchi, the experimental films of Marie Menken, and natural organisms such as fungi, participants will explore how photography and film can capture growth, connection, and transformation over time. Attendees should bring a notebook and a camera or cell phone; Participation is free. It will take place on Tuesday mornings, from January 16 to February 27.
