The Kremlin specifically uses myths about the “Great Patriotic War” to draw imaginary parallels with Putin’s army’s invasion of Ukraine.
Moscow has long been drawing parallels between the “WWII” and the war in Ukraine in order to prepare Russians for a long confrontation, although these actions contradict the Kremlin’s rhetoric, when Putin assures everyone that the supposed “conflict” in Ukraine will not affect the domestic politics of the Russian Federation.
On January 9, the Fontanka publication posted an interview with Russian State Duma deputy Andrei Kartapolov. He said that even during World War II, Soviet troops faced difficulties. Analysts from Institute for the Study of War decided to analyze Kartapolov’s speeches.
A deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation is specifically trying to expand the false analogy between the USSR’s struggle against Nazism in 1939-1945. and the invasion of Putin’s army into Ukraine on February 24, 2022. According to him, if we compare both of these wars, Russia is now at the turn of December 1943 – January 1944.
He also recalled that the “victorious march of the Soviet army” began after the defensive battle on the Kursk Bulge in the summer of 1943.
Here Kartapolov drew parallels with the unsuccessful counter-offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the summer of 2023 and the Battle of Kursk.
Analysts from ISW have already criticized Kartapolov’s parallels, since in 2023 the Russian army has not achieved a single high-profile success on the battlefield.
Only after journalists directly asked about the timing of the end of the war, taking the events of World War II as a starting point, did Kartapolov say that these wars cannot be compared.
However, at the same time, the politician again stated that Putin’s army will fight until it plants “the flag over the Reichstag.”
Analysts see in such Kremlin rhetoric an attempt to create a false impression among Russians that the Russian Armed Forces are invincible and are ready to sweep away any enemy from their path, as the Soviet army did in its time, reaching Berlin in May 1945.
Earlier, Gudkov explained why the split among the Russian elite has not yet become open.
Let us recall that Solovyov accused the West of being to blame for the events in Ukraine, when “Slavs are killing Slavs.”
