A number of 54 measles cases have been reported in Covasna County since the beginning of this year, 49 of which have been confirmed, according to the Covasna Public Health Directorate (DSP). Most cases come from the localities of Araci and Hetea, where vaccination coverage is extremely low. According to representatives of the Department of Surveillance and Control of Communicable Diseases, laboratory results are awaited for another 5 cases.
“In total, since the beginning of this year, we have 54 cases of measles, of which 49 are confirmed on the epidemiological link, and another 5 cases are under investigation with the laboratory. 50% of the cases come from the Araci and Hetea areas. Most are children, (…) but there was also an adult confirmed on December 8 (…) Many are unvaccinated, but the vast majority of those who were vaccinated were also denied, so the disease was not confirmed. About 10-15 cases arrive daily, but the problem is in the communities where vaccination coverage is low, where since September we started organizing vaccination campaigns, but we can’t even talk to those from Hetea, they are very reluctant”, we- said the representative of the Department of Surveillance and Control of Communicable Diseases, Igyártó Gabriella.

3 deaths at national level since the beginning of the epidemic
We remind you that at the beginning of December, the Ministry of Health declared a measles epidemic at the national level, as more than 2,000 cases were registered in 29 counties.
According to the National Institute of Public Health, between January 1, 2023 and January 7, 2024, 2,942 cases of measles were confirmed, and three deaths were also recorded, including two seven-month-old children from Braşov County, ineligible for vaccination with ROR, but also a 35-year-old adult from Bucharest, not vaccinated against measles, diagnosed with multiple myeloma.
The almost 3,000 confirmed cases were reported in 35 counties and in the city of Bucharest. The most illnesses were registered in the counties of Mureş – 770 and Braşov – 657, and 419 cases were confirmed in the capital.
In Covasna county, the most cases in recent years were registered in 2017 (80 cases).
Also popularly known as measles, measles is a highly contagious acute viral infection that appears as a rash and initially has cold-like symptoms. The virus is transmitted through the air, through sneezing, coughing, contact with the saliva or secretions of an infected person, and can last on external and internal surfaces for up to several hours, so infection can occur even without direct contact with the sick person.
Symptoms begin after an incubation period of 10-12 days and are characterized by fever, conjunctivitis, inflammation of the nasal mucosa, cough and bronchiolitis. The measles rash develops 2-4 days after the onset of fever and spreads from the head to the body over the next 3-4 days.
