The international hopefuls (U21) Malick Fofana leaves La Gantoise to try adventure abroad. The winger has signed with French Ligue 1 club Olympique Lyonnais until 2028, the two clubs announced on Wednesday.
A pure product of the Ghent club’s training center, Malick Fofana, 18, made his professional debut with the Buffalos on July 17, 2022 by taking part in the Belgian Super Cup against FC Bruges.
This season, the young pocket winger (1m69) has become a sure value in Hein Vanhaezebrouck’s squad with 31 matches played in all competitions with 4 goals and 6 assists on the clock.
His performances have earned the player of Guinean origin to be called up to the national youth team since last September. He played 5 matches with the U21s as part of qualifying for Euro 2025 but did not score a single goal.
Malick Fofana, who was under contract at the Ghelamco Arena until June 2026, is the third Belgian player, and the first non-defender, to wear the OL jersey, after Eric Deflandre (2000-2004) and Jason Denayer (2018-2022).
The amount of the transfer amounts to 17 million euros and could reach 22 with bonuses, as well as a 20% profit-sharing on the added value of a possible transfer, OL said in a press release.
He is the third incoming transfer for Lyon this winter after the Brazilians who arrived from Botafogo, goalkeeper Lucas Perri and defender Adryelson.
