During the Wednesday morning rush hour, a large traffic jam occurred on the Insulindelaan in Eindhoven due to ice formation. This happened after the tunnel was completely flooded on Tuesday night due to a problem with the pumps. The water was eventually pumped away, but a large layer of ice subsequently formed on the road.
According to the municipality, the water in the tunnel was discovered at one o’clock at night, after a number of underground pumps failed due to a malfunction in the control box. The fire brigade was called and a company then started pumping out the water.
Earlier, a spokesperson for the municipality said that there was still water in the tunnel during the morning rush hour. That turns out not to be true. The water has been pumped away, but because it is freezing, a thick layer of ice has formed.
Only one lane is open in each direction of the road. Motorists should expect delays and traffic controllers will try to direct traffic. Rijkswaterstraat is now working with a special machine to clean the lanes. It is not clear when both lanes will be open again.
The Insulindelaan in the Tongelre district is part of the Ring around the city center. This is an important traffic artery in the city, especially during the morning and evening rush hours.
