Aleksey Navalny (47) announced on Tuesday that he is isolated in a penal cell – but on Wednesday the world will get to see Vladimir Putin’s rival for the first time on a video link from the new penal camp in northern Siberia.

In December, the opposition leader was transferred from a prison near Moscow to the Arctic penal camp on the Yamal Peninsula. For 20 days, his whereabouts were unknown.
Now he has taken legal action against the prison management where he was previously, and on Wednesday the proceedings of the case started in the Kovrov district court – with Navalny on video link.
– I am so happy to see you all, Navalny said ironically when he saw the judge – with whom he has gradually become “familiar”.
– My dear Kovrov court, my dear defendants, my dear defenders and my dear secretary – I am so happy to see you, he smiled according to Mediazona.
He then asked for a few minutes with his lawyer.
It was on December 6 that it became known that Navalny had “disappeared”. His lawyer went to the IK-6 penal camp to meet his client in vain. On December 25, it finally became clear that Navalny had been moved to the IK-3 penal colony in the village of Kharp in the Arctic region of Jamal-Nenets. Not even the courts were informed of Navalny’s whereabouts.

Navalny tells the court that letters addressed to him have not yet arrived.
– I am quite far away.
He says that the conditions in the prison are “so there”.
– It is better than in Vladimir, he says – and compares it to the first penal camp he was in.
Via social media, he announced on Tuesday that he had been put in a special isolated punishment cell for a minor breach of the rules in the prison. He should not have presented himself in line with the rules.
– The idea that Putin would be happy to send me here to the north – and stop torturing me in a punishment cell, was not only cowardly, but also naive, Navalny said according to AP.

Wednesday’s trial was about how Navalny believed that the management at the Vladimir prison threw him in a punishment cell for twelve days without reason. A little before 10 o’clock Norwegian time, the judge made his decision, reports Mediazona.
What was the verdict?
The prison management had not done anything illegal.
