Likes and dislikes
Throughout his career David Bowie, who passed away on 10 January 2016 at the age of 69, was always very frank and direct. He expressed sincere admiration for some of his fellow artists, such as Iggy Pop (his albums «The Idiot» and «Lust for Life» were produced by the White Duke, who also wrote some songs together with his friend) and Stevie Ray Vaughan (who played on the 1983 album «Let’s Dance»). At the same time, he has never made a secret of his dislikes.
Gary Numan
New Romantic music pioneer Gary Numan has always been a huge Bowie fan. The White Duke, however, thought he was copying him: for this reason in 1980 he had him kicked out of the Kenny Everett Christmas Show. “It bothered me at the time because I was a huge fan of him and he had been such an important part of my life for so many years, so I was quite disappointed,” Numan told the NME in 2021. But later I realized that we all go through periods where we are more fragile or paranoid and we are not sure how to fit into all of this.”
Axl Rose
At the end of the 1980s David Bowie was dating Ola Hudson, Slash’s mother (she had made some of his stage costumes in the past). In 1989 she accompanied her on the set of the video for “It’s So Easy” by Guns N’ Roses. The frontman Axl Rose, noticing the White Duke’s obvious interest (who had drunk a few too many drinks) in his girlfriend at the time (the model Erin Everly, daughter of the singer Don Everly) attacked him by punching him. The two, following that episode, clarified.
Adriano Celentano
In 1999 David Bowie participated in Adriano Celentano’s program on Rai 1 Frankly I don’t care to present the single “Thursday’s Child”. After performing he sat down on the steps of the stage to be interviewed, but the chat was not memorable (and, to the final question “do you think we will see each other again in the future?”, Bowie replied succinctly: “After having met on this occasion , I think there is no longer any need to see each other.” A few days later, during the press conference to present “Hours” at the Four Seasons in Milan, Bowie said to the journalists present (who had asked him a question about his participation in Celentano’s show): “I understood perfectly what he was telling me . I think he’s an idiot. But I was there to play my song. In any case, I don’t think they will invite me again.” Molleggiato replied bluntly: «Maybe I’m an idiot but certainly being listed on the stock exchange at least makes you confused. The theme of the interview arises from a statement that Bowie had made in Paris and in which he said that he willingly participated in Frankly I don’t care because I was “socially engaged”. Therefore deluding myself that he was telling the truth, during the show I tried to involve him on a social level, realizing instead that he was “socially engaged” only in promoting his album”.
Jesus And Mary Chain
“It sounds like the Velvet Underground without Lou Reed.” This is how David Bowie defined the Jesus And Mary Chain in 1987.
Elton John
Initially David Bowie and Elton John were friends. He told Mr. Rocket Man: “We went out together with Marc Bolan, we went to gay clubs, but I think we simply drifted apart.” Despite some digs thrown over the years by the White Duke, directed at Sir Elton, the latter’s admiration for Bowie has never waned.
Country music
It is not a real character, but an entire musical genre, never appreciated by the White Duke: country music. Bowie once said, interviewed by journalist Terri Gross, about his listening: “I think the only music I never listened to (as a child, ed.) was country and western, and this is still true today”.
