Surabaya City to Launch Polio Immunization for 329,616 Children on January 15, 2024

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA — The City Government (Pemkot) of Surabaya, East Java, will implement polio immunization simultaneously on January 15 2024. This immunization targets 329,616 children.

This immunization follows up on the Circular Letter (SE) of the Minister of Health Number: IM.02.03/Menkes/1051/2023 concerning the Implementation of the National Immunization Sub-Week (Sub-PIN) in the Context of Handling Extraordinary Events (KLB) for Polio cVDPV2.

Head of the Surabaya City Health Service (Dinkes) Nanik Sukristina said that immunization would be carried out in two rounds. First on 15-21 January 2024. Then immunization will be carried out again on 19-25 February 2024.

Nanik explained the target of immunization polio In the city of Surabaya there were 329,616 children, divided into two groups. For the non-school group, the target is 122,947 children, whose immunization will be carried out at RW Halls.

Meanwhile, there are 206,669 children in the school age group up to 5-7 years, for whose immunization posts will be provided in schools. “The hope is that on the 15th (January) it can be carried out simultaneously, all targets will be met,” said Nanik, Tuesday (9/1/2024).

Nanik targets that polio immunization can cover one hundred percent of the target. For this reason, he asked for support from sub-district heads, village heads and heads of community health centers so that polio immunization can run smoothly. “Hopefully this activity in the future can run smoothly and successfully, so that it can provide benefits to residents, especially so that children in the city of Surabaya can avoid polio,” he said.

Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi hopes that polio immunization can be carried out more quickly. In fact, he encouraged immunization to cover all targets in one day. To make the process fast, he said, three teams were formed. One team moved to elementary schools, one team to PAUD, and another team moved to carry out immunizations at RW Halls to target children who were not yet in school.

“One day to finish, maximum two days. Later, those who are not in school will be gathered by the sub-district heads and village heads to be directed to the RW Hall. “So, we immediately ‘hit’ (immunization) because I was really worried,” said Eri.
