bread from heaven: the most disadvantaged present their own perspective
bread from heaven tells the story of Lili and Aníbal, two veteran street dwellers who sleep in the Bicocca neighborhood, near the Greco-Pirelli station, located in the city of Milan, Italy.
Christmas Eve is approaching, and the spectators, together with Lili and Aníbal, get to know the street nights of Milan, where we also walk through the soup kitchens where some Franciscan religious, who greet and feed the “homeless”, people of all kinds who they awaken loves and hates.
We soon become involved with Aníbal, a man in his fifties, somewhat aggressive, and with Lili, a woman a little younger than him and with whom he lives on the streets of Milan to ensure daily survival.
Shortly before Christmas, at the exit of a dining room, Aníbal and Lili hear what appears to be the cry of a newborn. Upon investigating carefully, they approach a garbage dump where the cries come from.
To their surprise, there among the waste, food leftovers and everything that people have left behind, the protagonists find a baby.
The little one is a newborn gem, he is smiling and looks healthy. He almost immediately wins the couple’s affection, and he is wrapped in dirty blankets that they have on hand.
The affection for the child grows quickly in their hearts, and their nobility forces them to take him to the hospital to provide him with the care he surely needs.
Once they arrive at the nearest children’s hospital, they witness something extraordinary: neither the doctors nor the nurses, in fact no one except them, can see the child with their eyes. Because of that confusion, Lili and Aníbal are expelled from the hospital, branded almost crazy.
Soon the protagonists understand that they realize that only the homeless can see the boy, and that perhaps he seems more than what he seems to be, he is really more than what he seems to be, and they interpret that he is actually a messenger with a special news.
Back at their shelter, Lili and Aníbal verify that it is true and it is not just their imagination, since not everyone can see the child.
In this way, that child invisible to some and clear and alive to others will be news and will cause an earthquake in the city.
