Polish President Andrzej Duda appears with jailed MPs amid constitutional crisis

Two Polish MPs, who had been issued a court order to be jailed, have been detained, police said, as quoted by Reuters.

Earlier today Polish President Andrzej Duda appeared with them.

In his New Year’s address, the Polish president accused the government of breaking the law

In 2015, weeks after the nationalist Law and Justice party came to power, its ally Duda pardoned Mariusz Kaminski and allowed him to become Minister of the Interior. Lawyers have questioned whether Duda has the power to pardon his violations before the court makes a final ruling.

The Supreme Court said last year that the case would be reopened. Kaminsky and his deputy, Maciej Wonsik, were convicted in December to two years in prison for abuse of office. Media reported that the police are looking for their former bosses today to put them in jail.

The speaker of the Sejma, the lower house of the Polish parliament, canceled the next scheduled meeting and moved it to next week, explaining that a peaceful parliamentary process cannot be guaranteed during the current constitutional crisisthe Polish news agency PAP reported.

The Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk accused President Andrzej Dudathat he prevented two legally convicted members of the center-right party “Law and Justice” (PiS) from going to prison, DPA reported.

“Mr. President, my heartfelt appeal for the good of the Polish state: you must put an end to this spectacle. It will lead us to a very dangerous situation,” Tusk said.

The Polish Prime Minister has warned that President Duda and PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski will be held accountable for sabotaging the constitution and breaking the law.

Poland will receive the first tranche under the Recovery Plan

Tusk and Duda are in conflictsince the current prime minister’s coalition ousted the long-time ruling party in elections.

The president, who comes from the ranks of PiS, sheltered in the presidential palace former interior minister Mariusz Kaminski and his former deputy in the ministry, Maciej Wonsik.
