Minute of silence and mourning ribbon: Bundesliga remembers the late Beckenbauer
After the death of Franz Beckenbauer, there will be a minute’s silence before the Bundesliga games on matchday 17 this weekend. The German Football League (DFL) also recommended “wearing a mourning ribbon,” as the league association announced on Tuesday.
Bayern Munich opens the matchday on Friday evening (8:30 p.m./Sat.1 and DAZN) against TSG Hoffenheim.
The German Football Association (DFB) joined in and will hold a minute’s silence in its leagues and cup competitions. This includes the 3rd league, the women’s Bundesliga, the Futsal Bundesliga and the next round in the men’s and women’s DFB Cup.
In memory of the club legend Franz Beckenbauer, the Munich Allianz Arena will be lit up with the inscription “Thank you Franz” in the evening hours from 4:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. in the coming days. At the end, the special lighting will also be visible at the game against Hoffenheim.

When Karl-Heinz Rummenigge hears the name Franz Beckenbauer, he thinks wistfully of a very personal incident many years ago. “I came to FC Bayern when I was 18, first day of training, 10,000 people. Rummenigge, European champion in 1980 and runner-up in the world championships in 1982 and 1986, credits Beckenbauer with playing a crucial role in the rise of FC Bayern Munich. “Without him, FC Bayern would never be what it is today,” he said. “He was the leader of the team that was promoted back in the 1960s. He shaped German football like no other.”
