The Rise of Kiyotaka: Breaking the Mold in Dota 2 Regional Qualifiers

Regional qualifiers for the CIS at BetBoom Dacha 3 for Dota 2 are in full swing. Of greatest interest to fans in our region in this qualifier is the newly assembled L1ga Team roster. Not only did the roster itself turn out to be quite stellar, but also the games with its participation were bright and unconventional. The latter is largely due to the pool of heroes of Gleb kiyotaka Zyryanov, who now, without exaggeration, can be called the most inventive mid laner in the region. Read about why the mere presence of kiyotaka in the lineup is already becoming a problem for opponents in the Cybersport.ru article.

Just like Topson

Kiyotaka also knew how to surprise last season, preparing for tournaments not the most meta and familiar heroes like Tinker, Broodmother, Outworld Destroyer and Riki. However, within the framework of the current qualification, he has outdone himself. While in all regions the standard Queen of Pain, Ember Spirit, Pangolier, Windranger, Invoker and other familiar characters are being picked in second position, Zyryanov is playing his own game.

Yes, the match on Tinker didn’t go well for him, but the whole team failed that map (RAMZES666 on Windranger generally finished with statistics of 2/11). One way or another, such a variety of non-standard and not the most frequently used heroes in a match introduces an element of chaos for the opponent. Playing against Arc Warden or Tinker often has a different macro structure than normal ones. Considering that many players and teams rarely encounter such characters on the competitive stage, sometimes it turns out that there are simply no ready-made countermeasures against them.

In addition, when the opponent has a tier-1 midlaner who can pull out Meepo, Tinker or Arc Warden, this forces you to spend bans on them, leaving more familiar meta heroes in other positions in your opponent’s pick. So, for example, in just a couple of episodes during the qualifiers for BetBoom Dacha 3, L1ga Team’s opponents repeatedly had to spend bans on precisely these kiyotaka heroes (and sometimes in the first stage):

  • Meepo — two bans;
  • Arc Warden – two bans (these are the only two hero bans in the tournament);
  • Storm Spirit (signature hero of Zyryanov) – three bans.

And all this in two episodes. In turn, L1ga Team itself calmly eliminates simply popular meta heroes, depriving opponents of Lion, Doom, Faceless Void, Nature’s Prophet and Chen.

At the same time, the kiyotaka pool also includes all the default mid-laners that are popular in the current meta. Because of this, the team calmly leaves him a last pick over and over again, realizing that it will still not be possible to close their “two” with bans.

The mid player you hate in the “pub”

Tinker, Arc Warden, Meepo themselves are an extremely nasty set of heroes. However, in matchmaking, Zyryanov has assembled a complete set of such vile characters: in the last eight days alone, he trained, in addition to Arc Warden and Meepo, Broodmother and Lone Druid (100% win rate). And this is not counting, again, the more standard heroes for the central line.

In the context of some players, you can often hear phrases like “Don’t forget, he has Meepo in his pool” or “But he can play Lone Druid too.” So kiyotaka has all these jokers that can break the usual course of the match.

Yes, as long as Zyryanov doesn’t come up with his own mid Grimstroke or Centaur Warrunner, like Topson does. However, the existing set of characters, which few can boast of on the professional stage, already gives him and the entire team a big boost in terms of variability of strategies and the ability to surprise the opponent. Of course, it is worth noting that now Zyryanov is not in his best condition, but this is an easily correctable point.

In general, the fact that kiyotaka doesn’t just push “pub” over and over again, and then the official word on the conventional signature Invoker or Storm Spirit, but tries to develop and do something non-standard, deserves respect. This does not mean that L1ga Team, assembled at the last moment, will win the qualification. But Zyryanov himself is a serious strengthening for the team, even if he is not in his best shape.
