Jarrad Branthwaite has appeared on the radar at Real Madrid, various English media report, including the Daily Mail and The Guardian. The Everton defender must serve in Madrid as a replacement for the long-injured David Alaba.
Alaba tore his cruciate ligament in the match against Villarreal last month (3-1 win) and will no longer play for Real Madrid this season. Raphaël Varane was previously mentioned as a possible replacement, but Branthwaite is now being linked with a transfer to Spain.
The rumor did not come out of the blue. Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti knows Branthwaite from his time at Everton. In fact, Ancelotti brought him from Carlisle United to the Toffees at the time.
Last season, the Englishman was loaned to PSV. In Eindhoven he was an important link in Ruud van Nistelrooij’s team that managed to win the TOTO KNVB Cup.
PSV even wanted to sign the 21-year-old man marker for longer, but ultimately found him too expensive. Technical director Earnest Stewart then decided to switch to Armel Bella-Kotchap.
Branthwaite stayed at Everton and that did the Liverpool club no harm. He has played seventeen Premier League matches so far this season and can count on a starting place under manager Sean Dyche.
If Branthwaite does indeed move from Everton to Real Madrid, he will meet fellow countryman Jude Bellingham. The midfielder came over from Borussia Dortmund for more than a hundred million euros last summer and is now the top scorer in the Spanish league.
