Hungary may approve assistance to Ukraine from the European Union if voting on it takes place annually. This was reported by the Politico newspaper with reference to diplomats and a document sent to the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council.
According to the publication’s interlocutors, the plan provides for the annual allocation of €12.5 billion in the form of grants and loans, TASS quotes. Thus, over four years the total amount will be €50 billion.
Politico notes that the ability to reconsider the decision to help Kyiv will allow Budapest to set conditions for further support for Ukraine. It is indicated that EU leaders are trying to put pressure on the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to revise the veto on aid to Ukraine before the EU summit on February 1.
“The seven-year EU budget is a multi-year structure, we cannot do this (coordinate it) year after year,” said one of the diplomats, whose opinion is cited by Politico.
At the last EU summit in Brussels, Orban vetoed amendments to the union budget for 2024-2027, which provide for the provision of € 50 billion to Ukraine during this period. Hungary proposes to look for extra-budgetary sources to assist Ukraine or limit ourselves to resolving this issue in the short term, for example for one year, and then analyze the situation and make a further decision.
