Mr. Kim, the suspect who attacked Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, with a weapon on the 4th, is being transported to the Busan District Court to appear for interrogation (substantive warrant review) before arrest at Yeonje Police Station in Yeonje-gu, Busan./News 1

The Busan Police Agency decided not to disclose the personal information of Mr. Kim (67), who is suspected of attempting to kill Lee Jae-myeong, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, by stabbing him with a weapon (attempted murder).

The Busan Police Agency announced that it made this decision after holding a suspect personal information disclosure committee meeting on the afternoon of the 9th to discuss whether to disclose Mr. Kim’s personal information. It was reported that at a meeting attended by a total of seven people, no more than two-thirds of the committee members agreed to reveal Mr. Kim’s personal information.

The ‘Special Act on the Punishment of Specific Violent Crimes’ stipulates that the suspect’s personal information may be disclosed only for violent crimes such as murder, attempted murder, and sexual violence. In the case of a suspect in a violent crime, requirements such as ‘if the crime is cruel and the damage is serious’, ‘if there is sufficient evidence to believe that the crime was committed’, ‘if necessary for public interest such as guaranteeing the public’s right to know’, ‘if the suspect is not a juvenile’, etc. Disclosure of personal information is possible only if the information is met. The police previously announced that they would not disclose Mr. Kim’s party affiliation in accordance with the ‘political party law’.

Mr. Kim was arrested on the 4th on charges of stabbing Lee Jae-myeong, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, in the neck with a weapon while he was visiting the Gadeokdo Daehang Observatory in Gangseo-gu, Busan at around 10:27 a.m. on the 2nd.

As a result of the police investigation, it was found that Mr. Kim followed CEO Lee’s movements with a weapon he had purchased the day before he attacked him. The weapon was purchased online around April of last year, and it was also revealed that it had been partially modified.

Mr. Kim carried this weapon and visited Bongha Village in Gimhae and Pyeongsan Village in Yangsan according to Representative Lee’s schedule. The police found that Gadeokdo Island, the location of the crime, was also visited the day before the incident. Regarding Mr. Kim riding in two ordinary vehicles while traveling, the police said, “We investigated the car owners, but there does not appear to be any involvement as an accomplice.”

On the 7th, the police urgently arrested and investigated Mr. A, a man in his 70s, on charges of assisting Mr. Kim in his crime (assisting attempted murder). Mr. A is accused of promising to send Mr. Kim’s ‘remarks’ (excuse) by mail. The ‘Message’, which is 8 pages of A4 paper, is a document that Mr. Kim had when he was arrested, and the police are said to have confirmed that the ‘Message’ already secured matches the content that Mr. A had promised to send.

Mr. A was released around 11:30 pm on the 8th. A police official stated the reason for the release of Mr. A, saying, “The extent of his involvement was relatively minor, he was old, there was sufficient proof through the statements of those involved, and there was no concern about destruction of evidence or flight.”

The police plan to detain Mr. Kim and transfer him to the prosecution on the 10th and announce the final investigation results.
