Former Australian coach John Buchanan opined that David Warner cannot be seen as a legend of the game. Even while admitting that he had talent, Warner was not an exceptional player, the former star opined.
Warner, who retired from Test and ODI cricket with over 15,000 runs, has been one of Australia’s greatest match-winners over the years. Warner ended his Test career with a last-innings half-century as Australia thrashed Pakistan 3-0. Also, he scored a stunning century in the first Test of the series.
Speaking to SEN Breakfast, Buchanan reckons the likes of Don Bradman, Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne should be classed as greats. The 70-year-old explained:
“I think he has definitely done well in this career, he has scored more than 8000 runs. He has played over 100 Tests, over 160 ODIs and nearly 100 T20Is. Performance-wise, he’s outstanding.”
“Legends, in my opinion, are people who actually do and have done something extraordinary that no one else can match. So Bradman, McGrath and Vaughan are the best in my opinion.”
Warner, 37, played an integral role in Australia’s two World Cup victories and their only World T20 title.
