Job Offer: Dress Up as the Monkey King, Eat Free Bananas & Get Paid $842/Month in China

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – You do not need to be an acrobat, or have supernatural powers in order to work in this job offered in China. All you have to do is be a fan of the Chinese legend, “The Monkey King,” and be able to… Eat a lot of the free bananas you are given.

If this sounds like the perfect job for you, you may want to send your resume to the Wuzhishan Scenic Area in Hebei Province in northern China.

The tourist destination wants to hire someone to dress up as the legendary Chinese character, the Monkey King, and is willing to pay $842 a month to the right candidate, according to the state-run Shangyou News.

In return, the employee must spend time in a cave at the bottom of the mountain, where he is fed by tourists.

The Chinese legend of the Monkey King is popular in China in the same way that the Brothers Grimm fairy tales are popular in the West.

The legend has fueled the imagination of countless children and inspired many films and television programmes.

The story centers around Sun Wukong, a monkey born from stone, who gained supernatural powers from a martial artist.

The monkey travels above the clouds while accompanying the holy monk Tang Sanzang on his “Journey to the West” to obtain Buddhist texts in India.

The journey begins at Wuxishan, or Five Fingers Mountain, where the Monkey King is besieged by gods angry at his arrogance.

The monk frees him, and then the duo sets off on their adventure.

However, the job candidate will have to stay put.

The job requires the person to wear a mask and a monkey costume and hide in a cave at the bottom of the mountain, according to clips circulating on social media.

An essential part of the role is to accept snacks offered by visiting children, such as apples, instant noodles and, of course, lots of bananas.

One Douyin user (the Chinese version of TikTok) joked: “What is this amazing job? There is endless free food, and a salary.”

Moreover, the job requires only minimal experience, as an on-site manager told Shangyou News: “There are no academic requirements. The main requirements are to have a passion for Sun Wukong, a certain acting talent, and the ability to Be lively, cheerful and friendly to interact with tourists.”

The director added that two employees had already been hired to play the character, and now only one employee was needed.

The director emphasized that actors are not required to eat all the food served to them immediately, noting that instead, current actors usually keep some bananas to share with their colleagues after they finish their shift.

The company also installed an electric heater inside the cave to protect against cold weather.
