United Airlines and Alaska Airlines Ground Boeing 737 MAX 9 Aircraft Due to Loose Bolts and Poorly Attached Equipment

UpdateUnited Airlines has found loose bolts during the inspection of several of its Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft. It was also the type of Alaska Airlines plane that lost part of its side during a flight from Oregon to California on Friday. That company now also reports that it has found “poorly attached equipment” in some aircraft of the same type.

The FAA had grounded dozens of aircraft of this type since Saturday after an incident with an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9. A panel in the fuselage came loose during mid-flight on Friday. The plane, with 171 passengers and six crew members on board, was at an altitude of 5,000 meters at the time. No one was injured.

Boeing then asked all airlines to check these aircraft.

United Airlines said Monday it had found loose bolts on several of its planes. They had to be detained, according to a press release. According to the specialized website ‘The Air Current’, loose bolts were found on at least five of the company’s aircraft. The company has 79 such aircraft in its fleet, making it the largest operator for this Boeing model.

“Poorly mounted equipment”

Alaska Airlines now says initial inspections found “poorly secured equipment,” without specifying what it was. The defects were found on “some aircraft”, the company said.

Turkish Airlines, Copa Airlines (Panama) and Aeromexico also grounded Boeing 737 MAX types.

Boeing lost sharply on the stock exchanges in the United States on Monday.
