ROCKEFELLER, OSLO (Dagbladet): On Monday, NHO organizes a foreign evening at Rockefeller in Oslo, and has brought in Finland’s former prime minister Sanna Marin to participate.
The panel discussion takes place the day before NHO’s annual meeting on Tuesday 9 January.
The last time Marin was in Norway, she was interviewed on the program “Skavlan” in the autumn. During the panel discussion on Monday, she says that she is happy to be back.
– I have to admire Norwegians, you are much more relaxed than Finns, says the former prime minister.
Among other things, she points out that people are much more relaxed in Oslo than in Helsinki, despite the fact that it is colder in Norway.
– In Helsinki, people are completely covered, even though it is only minus 15 degrees there. I am very happy to be here, says Marin.
Dagbladet updates the case.
Asking for tougher sanctions
After Sanna Marin’s party lost the Finnish election last year, she resigned as party leader. In September, she was in place in her new role as representative of the Tony Blair Institute (TBI).
The war in Ukraine is one of the topics Marin discusses in Oslo on Monday.
– We must introduce stricter sanctions against Russia to prevent them from financing the war further, says Marin to the assembly.
She says that the Nordic countries have a lot to learn from the security situation in the world.
– During my time as Prime Minister, Finland and Sweden decided to apply for NATO membership. Security in the Nordic region lies in the alliance, says Marin.
– Could just be the start
The participants will, among other things, discuss the security situation in Europe and the Nordics in connection with the war in Ukraine, as well as the importance of international cooperation in a time of pressure.
Others who are present during the discussion on Monday are NHO leader Ole Erik Almlid, chief of staff for NATO’s general secretary Stian Jenssen, leader of the Norwegian Nobel Committee Berit Reiss-Andersen, Middle East expert Marte Heian-Engdal and foreign affairs editor at NRK Sigurd Falkenberg Mikkelsen.
Doctoral scholar at the Department of Defense Studies (UiO) Karen-Anna Eggen leads the talks.
The war between Israel and Hamas is also a topic during the debate.
Middle East expert Heian-Engdal says that the conflict has become more prolonged and extensive than she imagined.

– We are on day 94. That is incredible in itself. I thought it would last a long time, but I had not imagined this, she says during the panel discussion.
– If emergency aid does not come in or if there is a halt to the conflict now, this will only be the start of an enormous disaster, says Heian-Engdal.
NRK’s Mikkelsen describes the situation as “stepping on eggs”. He refers, among other things, to the fact that the attack against Israel on 7 October 2023 could not have been foreseen.
– We must be prepared for the unpredictable, he says.
