French Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne tendered her resignation on Monday. President Emmanuel Macron wants to reshuffle the French cabinet, his office said. Borne will remain in office until a successor is found for her.
Borne, a party colleague of Macron, has been Prime Minister of France since May 2022. She was the second female Prime Minister of France. Macron thanked Borne on X for her efforts. According to political followers, her resignation had been in the air for some time.
According to political experts, Macron wants to give new impetus towards the European parliamentary elections and the Olympic Games in Paris this summer. Last month he promised a “new political initiative”.
The popularity of the French government has plummeted recently. Macron and Borne’s party lost the majority in the French parliament in June 2022. The party remained the largest, but the elections were considered lost.
Last summer there were massive protests across France against major reforms in the pension system. This led to riots in several places. In addition, there has been dissatisfaction for some time about high inflation and problems with migration. The anger of many French people was specifically aimed at the Renaissance party of Macron and Borne.

No successor yet
In France, the prime minister is appointed as head of the cabinet by the president. Macron has not yet put forward a successor for the 62-year-old Borne.
The most frequently mentioned candidates are education minister Gabriel Attal (34) and defense minister Sebastien Lecornu (37). Both would be France’s youngest-ever prime minister if appointed.
Bruno Le Maire (now the Minister of Finance) and former Minister of Agriculture Jielen Denormandie are also mentioned by political interpreters.
