VP-Zierfuß/Hungerländer: Vienna’s compulsory schools finally need comprehensive violence and extremism prevention

Current media reports confirm: Vienna’s compulsory schools have a problem with extremism and violence. Instead of round tables and expensive individual projects, comprehensive prevention is needed!

Vienna (OTS) “Teachers have been reporting to us for months about the increasing grievances in Vienna’s compulsory schools. “Prevention of extremism and violence in schools must be permanent, compulsory and comprehensive,” said the education spokesman for the Vienna People’s Party, local councilor Harald Zierfuß, who last year submitted a request to the local council about violence in schools and a package of measures for more prevention.

The teachers’ reports cite numerous cases of radicalization. A student was stopped in a park and forced to change his religion. Knives and extremist slogans against fellow students and teaching staff were also reported. “The absurdity of the fact that teachers now have to fear using certain symbols in class can no longer be surpassed,” continued Zierfuß.

The integration spokeswoman for the Vienna People’s Party, local councilor Caroline Hungerländer, has submitted several applications to the local council against political Islam in recent months, including in schools and on social media, which were rejected by the city government. She emphasizes: “It cannot be the case that groups of students dictate what teachers teach in Austrian classrooms. This applies to symbols as well as to the theory of evolution and historical events. The rising anti-Semitism in schools is particularly worrying. Our city urgently needs a spiritual national defense that conveys our basic European values.”

“The increasing number of violent incidents in Viennese schools is dramatic and action is urgently needed. Our state party chairman, City Councilor Karl Mahrer, has already called for it several times: illegal migration into the social system must finally be consistently prevented,” continued Zierfuß.

In the event of severe violations of our values, sanctions are needed, such as the reduction of social benefits and the revocation of Austrian citizenship if convicted of incitement to hatred and if convicted of dual nationals if convicted under the Prohibition Act, explains Hungerländer. “Christoph Wiederkehr, as the city councilor responsible for integration and education, must now prove that he is actually serious,” concluded Hungerländer.
