“Oppenheimer” Sweeps Golden Globes with Five Awards, Beats “Barbie” as Audience Favorite

“Oppenheimer,” Christopher Nolan’s drama about the inventor of the atomic bomb, was the big winner at the Golden Globes yesterday, while summer hit “Barbie” fell short of the best comedy award that went to “Poor Things.”

The film “Oppenheimer” won five awards, including Best Drama, Best Director (Nolan), and Best Original Score, in addition to two awards for Best Actor in a Drama for Cillian Murphy and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr.

Nolan told reporters that the “tragedy” of J. Robert Oppenheimer, a scientist who remained loyal to his country and did not apologize for what he did, yet was “ravaged by guilt,” interested him.

In turn, his wife Emma Thomas, the film’s producer, said his work on “one of the darkest developments in our history was unlike anything anyone else had done.”

Murphy, who plays the main character in the three-hour feature film, praised the “visionary director,” while Robert Downey Jr., who plays the hero’s arch-rival, described the film as a “masterpiece.”

By winning the Best Director award, Nolan beat out Greta Gerwig, who directed the movie “Barbie,” which was released simultaneously with “Oppenheimer,” which prompted many viewers to watch both films in theaters in what was known as the “Parpenheimer” phenomenon. As a result, they together generated $2.4 billion in box office revenue.

The movie “Barbie,” which centers on the famous doll, was the favorite to win the largest number of Golden Globe Awards, with nine nominations, but it won only two awards: Best Song Written by Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas, and Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement (New Category). After achieving the highest revenues for the year.

“We dedicate this award to every person who dressed up and went to the greatest place on earth… movie theaters,” said Margot Robbie, the film’s star and producer.

But “Barbie” lost to “Poor Things”, which won the award for best comedy, for which Emma Stone won the award for best actress in a musical or comedy for her portrayal of Bella Baxter.
