Firefly Green Fuels Revolutionizes Air Travel with New Low-Emission Biofuel

Firefly Green Fuels has been looking for a way to produce fuel from cheap raw materials for a long time. If ever something is cheap and always available, it’s poop.

The company has worked with experts at Cranfield University to confirm that the new fuel’s carbon emissions are 90% lower than traditional jet fuel. Chemically, however, this fuel “behaves” exactly like fossil oil.

The new biofuel is currently being independently tested at the German Space Agency’s DLR Institute in collaboration with Washington State University.

Although we are a long way from flying in airplanes powered by the new type of fuel, the beginning is promising. The company states that each person annually produces enough wastewater to produce 4-5 liters of biofuel. For example, to fly a passenger plane from London to New York would require at least 10,000 people’s annual waste water – that’s a very large amount of excrement.

According to the BBC, the entire volume of Britain’s sewage system covers only five percent of the country’s total aviation fuel demand. However, even five percent is a lot. The British Ministry of Transport has granted two million pounds sterling to a start-up company with the aim of continuing research and potentially bringing the use of the new type of biofuel closer to the flights of major airlines as well.
