The Labyrinth of Injustice: Former Dominican Judge Condemns the State of Justice in the Country

The former judge of the Constitutional Court, Wilson Gómez Ramírez, stated that in the Dominican Republic justice is an aspiration, not a reality, this as a result of the decisions of some courts.

“After so many years and so many activities, seeing justice inside and out, I go through the pain of concluding that, in the country, although there are decisions and courts that honor justice, they are isolated. In a general sense, justice in this country is a wish, a desire, but not a reality,” said the prominent jurist.

The former judge of the Constitutional Court, from 2011 to 2020, Gómez Ramírez recalled the teacher of Dominican Law, Manuel Bergés Chupani, who on one occasion told him “In the Dominican Republic there will never be a good and healthy administration of justice, no matter how excellent the laws, if you do not have top quality human material.”

The statements of the legal professional are part of the content of the documentary by René Fortunato “The Labyrinth of Injustice”, which premiered this Tuesday, January 2 on the YouTube channel Videocine Palau and can be viewed for free by all interested parties.

The award-winning director’s new film production has as its plot the current functioning of the courts in the country, showing irregularities, arbitrariness and the abuse of power that citizens who turn to them in search of justice often suffer.

With a duration of 28 minutes, the short film takes as reference a sentence issued by the courts of the Republic with the condition of res judicata, after analyzing it it shows that, in many cases, in Dominican judges relationships weigh more than the reasons.

“To strengthen Dominican democracy, attention must be paid to the functioning of justice, especially the courts, because without reliable justice, we cannot speak of true democracy,” said Fortunato when referring to the content of the documentary “The Labyrinth of Injustice.” ”.

He said that the absence of a convincing and forceful regime of consequences to apply to judges who deviate from legal norms, maliciously affecting one of the parties in litigation, is one of the great deficiencies of the current justice system in our country.

The director of “La Trinchera del Honor” highlighted that one of the purposes of this new documentary is to draw attention to this and other problems of the Dominican courts.

Fortunato invited the public that follows his work to subscribe to his channel. YouTube Videocine Palauwhere their film productions are available for free.
