The Surge in Prices for Used Cars: Reasons and Concerns

In the years after the pandemic, old cars have increased in price by 20-30%. Among the reasons for this is that the demand for used cars is greater than the supply.

“There is also a drastic increase in services to car dealers. Not the car itself as a cost, but there is a drastic increase in services in terms of servicing the car itself before it goes on sale. Painting certain details – if they have used a service at a price 150 BGN, now the painting of a detail costs BGN 250. I don’t know what is the reason for this sharp rise in prices, but the brakes must definitely be hit there, because it will lead to an avalanche increase in the prices of used cars,” said the executive director of the Association of Car Importers Tsvetelina Tsaneva in the studio of “Bulgaria Morning”.

According to her, many people from Bulgarian society do not maintain their cars well enough. We often forget the technical reviews, and the control there is very understated. Of course, this is directly related to the income of citizens and what kind of cars we can afford.

“The minimum wage is a little over BGN 900, but imagine how much a family can support, and if the payment for a car is BGN 600-700 or BGN 1,000 per month, how much should a person’s salary be in order to buy new car. Separately in Europe, new cars already cost 500-600 euros per month to installments of 1,000 euros per month, these sums represent the salary of the average Bulgarian citizen,” Tsaneva explained on the air of Bulgaria ON AIR.

She is adamant that we should not call a car “old” as soon as we hear that it is used, as a car that has been used for more than 6 months is officially considered used. Actually its quality is still good.

Tsaneva also noted the good trend of increasing the number of electric cars in larger cities.
