(CNN) Former US President Donald Trump said on the 6th that he believes the country’s civil war could have been avoided through “negotiations.” He argued that the war to end slavery was ultimately unnecessary and that President Lincoln should have done more to avoid bloodshed.

While campaigning in Newton, Iowa, Trump said of the Civil War, “There were a lot of mistakes made. To be honest, I think we could have negotiated the Civil War.”

His remarks come as the Iowa caucuses, the first battle for the Republican nomination, are about a week away. Opinion polls show Trump holding a wide lead in the state over his rivals, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.

Regarding the Civil War, Haley did not mention slavery when asked about the causes of the Civil War at a citizen dialogue meeting hosted by CNN on the 4th. He later clarified that he thought it was a known fact that slavery was the cause.

Mr. Trump’s remarks were not a rebuttal to Ms. Haley’s remarks, nor did he make any reference to her.

In fact, before the Civil War began, there were a series of attempts to reach a deal to save the Union. However, compromise was not enough to resolve the continuation of slavery in the South, and the United States entered a civil war.

Mr. Trump did not discuss how he could have prevented the civil war, which he described as “horrible, but very fascinating.”

Former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney criticized Trump’s views on social media, asking how he could defend them against Republicans who support him.
