Hannah Jadagu Releases Debut Full-Length Album ‘Aperture’ – A Masterpiece of Indiepop and R&B

That a complete full-length LP with twelve tracks surprises you from the first listen and that you discover at least five perfect ones is not an easy task in these times of immediacy where continuous releases of singles and EPs proliferate. And that is what he has achieved Hannah Jadaguthe young promise of indiepop originally from Texas but living in New York, who at only 20 years old has released her first full-length album Aperture, where he is overflowing with talent and collects all the life experiences of his adolescent stage at university. Thus it reflects his internal conflicts in a melancholic and reflective tone with songs that range from lo-fi and dream pop, through new soul and R & B to the most guitar-driven indie rock. A style that he has drawn from artists like Arlo Parks and even reminiscent of Willowdaughter of the well-known actor Will Smith.

Hannah He started composing songs at home and uploading them to his SoundCloud. That is why he has pleasantly surprised us with the excellent production of his work, having been composed completely DIY and taking into account his youth. This has led him to record with the legendary SubPop label after publishing his first EP, “What Is Going On?” recorded entirely on an iPhone 7 with Garageband.

A brilliant and sophisticated album in technical production and sound recordings, with atmospheric and instrumental themes among which “Say it now” stands out, a perfect pop single that transports us to the unknowns and internal struggle of Hannah Jadagu through rhetorical questions that demand an answer, reflecting that intensity with sharp and enveloping guitars (“Could you tell me why it’s a war when I try”), as well as in “Lose” where through danceable synths and rhythmic guitars, he honestly reflects his fears when starting a new relationship (“So why am I scared to lose?”).

Moments such as “What you did” also stand out, the most guitar-driven and powerful passage, where she launches direct accusations contrasting the pain with the singer’s sweet voice. (“Why try to be the one that you can fall on?”) (“Play pretend/ Act like it’s best if we make amends, but/ I don’t wanna talk to you again”)

“Admit it” an R&B ballad of love but brotherhood, dedicated to her sister as a reference who has influenced her since she was a child, and with which she discovered the artists who have inspired her artistic work. Through the synth pop chorus (“I’ll admit, I’ll admit, I’ll admit it”) she asks for forgiveness for not being by her side like she did when she needed her, reflecting the value that family has. for her.

In “Warning Sign”, a bedroom pop song with a psychedelic feel, he reflects his vulnerability, aware of his self-destructive behavior (“Every time I get this far / It always falls apart… / Never see a warning sign”) but also showing maturity by wanting to break and free oneself (“Breaking all my ties to just get through”). A beautiful moment with elegant instrumentation, accompanied by a piano background mixed with synthpop airs and a perfect funk guitar riff.

In “Scratch the Surface’, a dance piece with a melodic sample, he addresses superficiality and liquid relationships that lack depth and authenticity (“You just scratch the Surface/ Shut out all that’s worth it») showing a halo of hope and longing for tranquility by renouncing the past to find peace with herself (”No, I don’t wanna reach behind, been forever/ Have a piece of mind, nothing’s better”).

In Aperture It talks about love and lack of love, reflecting its fears and doubts through continuous questions to which it does not find answers, but facing the transformative process with optimism and maturity. A maturity that she bravely shows in the musical and lyrical composition of her album, going from ecstasy to sadness through the different musical registers that she masters with masterful ease. A new R&B promise that should not be lost sight of.
