– When we came back to the bench after the goal in the box play…, says Nick Dowd. Unlucky bounce, (Darcy) Kuemper drops the puck, I can’t get it away. I think we all looked at each other and thought ‘there’s no way we’re going to lose this game because of that bounce’.
Said and done. Nicolas Aube-Kubel tied the game at 3-3 before playing Carlson for the game-clinching 4-3 goal with only 53 seconds left to play.
It was Aube-Kubel’s first three-point game in the NHL while defenseman Carlson scored his second goal in three games. Before that, the 33-year-old was coming off his longest goalless streak of his 15-year NHL career when he went 32 consecutive games without a goal.
– As a defender, the goals sometimes seem to come in waves, says Carlson. The goal drought was obviously longer than anyone wanted, including me. Hopefully this means more good things will click for me.
The win meant the Capitals snapped their losing streak while extending the Kings’ streak to five games. Washington’s playoff hopes remain alive.
– It feels good to win, states Nick Dowd.
The Capitals move up to sixth place in the Metropolitan Divison (19–13–6) after the Pittsburgh Penguins lost to the Buffalo Sabers (1–3). The team is still in the fight for a playoff spot from the Eastern Conference
Los Angeles is third (20–10–6) in the Pacific Division behind the Vancouver Canucks and Vegas Golden Knights.
For Washington, a bit of time off is waiting as the next game is not until Friday night. Then you face the Seattle Kraken at home in Capital One Arena. Drop-off 01.00, Swedish time.
