China said on Monday that its security services had discovered another espionage incident in which the British intelligence service, also known as MI6, used a foreigner in China to collect secrets and information.
The Chinese Ministry of State Security announced on its WeChat account that a foreigner, referred to only as Huang, was in charge of a foreign consulting agency, and in 2015, British intelligence began an “intelligence cooperative relationship” with this person.
According to the statement, British intelligence then ordered Huang to enter China several times, and ordered him to use his public identity as a cover to collect China-related intelligence for British intelligence.
The Chinese government said that British intelligence provided professional training to Huang in Britain and elsewhere, and provided him with special spy equipment.
“After a careful investigation, state security services immediately discovered evidence of Huang’s involvement in espionage activities and took criminal coercive measures against him,” she added.
Meanwhile, the British government said Chinese spies were targeting its officials in sensitive positions in politics, defense and business as part of an increasingly sophisticated espionage operation to access secrets.
Recently, a researcher in the British Parliament denied that he was a Chinese spy.
China has repeatedly denounced these accusations, and a Foreign Ministry spokesman said they were “completely unfounded.”
China is taking strict measures against potential threats to its national security, and has uncovered several cases of espionage it has seized in recent years.
The government also warned its citizens in the country and abroad of the dangers of falling into espionage activities.
China also launched a massive crackdown on foreign consulting firms and due diligence firms due to threats to disclose state secrets, which has raised concerns among foreign companies operating in the country.
