Last year, lottery players in Baden-Württemberg spent a little more money than the year before to try their luck. According to Lotto Baden-Württemberg, they bet a total of around 1.094 billion euros in 2023, which is around 2.2 percent more than in the previous year. A total of 30 people in the southwest celebrated their million-dollar fortune with the crosses on the lottery ticket – one less than the year before. 185 other tipsters were able to win 100,000 euros each.
“In total, we paid out around 540 million euros in winnings to the lucky ones,” said Georg Wacker, managing director of the State Toto-Lotto GmbH Baden-Württemberg. He wants to publish further details about the lottery balance sheet on Monday (10 a.m.) in Stuttgart.
Nationwide, a good three tipsters per week became new millionaires last year – a total of 179 people pocketed millions in winnings. A year earlier there were even 187. The highest sum of the year, 120 million euros, was won by a Eurojackpot bettor from Schleswig-Holstein last June. At least 117 million euros went to Hamburg in August, and a lucky person from Bremen won 107 million euros – both also at Eurojackpot.
And in Baden-Württemberg there was particularly great rejoicing in mid-October: a bettor managed to crack the Eurojackpot and collect a tax-free win of a whopping 54.2 million euros – according to the company, the third-highest win ever at Lotto Baden-Württemberg was achieved. In April, a player from Stuttgart secured almost 8.46 million euros in the Lotto 6aus49 lottery draw on the weekend.
As always, only one person reliably benefited from the lotteries – the state. Last year, state budgets collected around 3.28 billion euros (2022: 3.18 billion) in taxes and fees – for welfare, sport, art, culture, monument preservation and environmental protection.
