Director Christopher Nolan’s historical biographical drama Oppenheimer and black comedy Poor Night on Monday won the main Golden Globes. The season of important film awards began with their presentation in Hollywood.
Oppenheimer, about the architect of the atomic bomb, was named the best drama by around three hundred voters, after the organizing institution reformed itself after previous criticism and attempted a new beginning. The film takes home five statuettes, including those for actor Cillian Murphy for best dramatic performance in a leading role and Robert Downey Jr. for performance in a supporting role.
Murphy portrayed nuclear physicist Oppenheimer, Downey Jr. then Lewis Strauss, a member of the Atomic Energy Commission, adds the AP agency. “It was a no-brainer that one of the darkest moments in human history would be made into a talky three-hour, R-rated film,” emphasized producer Emma Thomas as she accepted the top prize with director Nolan at the end of the evening.
The statuette for best musical or comedy goes to surreal gothic sci-fi Poor people by the Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, which Czech cinemas will start showing on January 25. In it, Emma Stone plays a young Victorian woman who is brought back to life by an unconventional scientist and awakens sexually and otherwise despite the prejudices of the time.
The film loosely varying the story of Frankenstein was preferred by the judges over the favored summer blockbuster Barbie, with Emma Stone also taking home the award for acting in the musical or comedy category. “I see the film as a romantic comedy, but only in the sense that instead of my character Bella falling in love with a specific person, she falls in love with life. She learns to accept the good and the bad, which has also affected how I look at life ,” said the thirty-five-year-old actress on the red carpet.
In the end, Barbie turned in only two out of nine nominations. He takes home the statuettes for the best song, which was the closing piano ballad What Was I Made For? by Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell, and for Outstanding Commercial Success, a newly created award. The film had the highest worldwide sales of all the titles listed last year, in total Barbie had 1.4 billion dollars on her account, which translates to over 32 billion crowns.

Actress Margot Robbie took the stage in a pink dress reminiscent of the 1977 Barbie Superstar doll. “We’d like to dedicate this statuette to everyone who dressed up for our movie and went to the best place on earth: the movie theater,” she said. At the time of the summer premiere, the producers managed to start a trend where people went to the cinemas to see Barbie dressed in pink.
Best actress in the drama category went to Lily Gladstone, who plays a Native American wife who, in part because of her fabulous wealth, is married to a white man played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the period film Killers of the Blooming Moon. The 37-year-old American spoke the first words of her acceptance speech in the language of the Blackfoot Indian tribe, to which she belongs. The actress grew up on a reservation. “This is a historic victory and it’s not just me,” said Lily Gladstone.
The male actor award for a leading role in a comedy or musical went to Paul Giamatti, who excelled as a teacher in the film The Holdovers. This new film by director Alexander Payne does not yet have a Czech distributor.
The prize for the screenplay goes to French director Justine Triet and her colleague Arthur Harari for the drama Anatomy of a Fall, which also became the best foreign language title. The animated film of the year is The Boy and the Heron by Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki.
In the category for the best television drama, the series Struggle for Power scored points, the representatives of its protagonists Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin and Matthew Macfadyen also rejoiced. The best series comedy was then the new series Medvěd about a young chef who returns to Chicago from better restaurants to run a family sandwich shop. The third successful series of the evening was the South Korean Ve pr from Netflix.

As the AP agency reminds, the 81st year of the Golden Globes started a new and uncertain stage of these awards. Their organizing body, called the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, was disbanded after earlier criticism that it was not ethnically and gender diverse enough. A new one has sprung up on its floor plan, in which almost half are women and whites make up only a minority.
The company, with the support of CBS, is now trying to make the Golden Globes the third most prestigious gala of the year, after the Oscars and the Grammys. “Journalists from the Golden Globes, thank you for being able to change,” thanked Robert Downey Jr., one of this year’s winners, during the ceremony.
The evening in the social hall of the Beverly Hilton International Ballroom in California was hosted by Jo Koy, a 52-year-old comedian of Filipino origin. He brushed against the frequent award winner Meryl Streep and the above-average length of the film Oppenheimer. But when the audience didn’t laugh at one of his jokes, the presenter mentioned that he was chosen at the last minute and, according to speculation, only after several more famous celebrities turned down. “They called me ten days ago. Did you think I could write a perfect monologue in that time?” he asked.

According to the New York Times the presenter’s performance was sometimes disastrous, half of the winners seemed to take the Golden Globes seriously and the other half seemed to make fun of them. While last year the organizers gave space to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, this year they avoided current political topics such as Israel’s retaliatory operation in the Gaza Strip after attacks by the terrorist movement Hamas.
With the presentation of the Golden Globes, the Hollywood awards season began, which culminates on March 10 with the most famous Oscars. Celebrities gathered this year in such numbers for the first time since the more than six-month strike of actors and screenwriters ended in the fall. Many were only now able to promote the films and series in front of the cameras for the first time, in which they had been silent for many months, as required by union rules at the time of the strike.
