Hugo Sigal (76), the godfather of the Alzheimer Research Foundation – Stopalzheimer, presented a check for 5,000 euros to the foundation at the Hestia residential care center in Wemmel. That is the proceeds from the cupcake campaign that Nicole and Hugo’s famous Wemmel resident kicked off in September. In November 2022, Nicole Josy, Hugo’s partner, passed away. She was 76 years old and suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.
Armonea, the umbrella company of 74 residential care centers in our country, held a sale of cupcakes in aid of the Alzheimer Research Foundation. It was no coincidence that the campaign started in September last year at WZC Hestia in Wemmel. “I live in Wemmel and am a real Wemmel resident,” says Peter Hugo Sigal of the Alzheimer Research Foundation. “Nicole’s mother also lived here in Hestia for years. Nicole and I visited her every day. I kicked off the cupcake campaign here in September and had a lot of fun baking and decorating them here.”
“It was very light with all those colors and decorations. The cupcakes were really appreciated, because we have now ended up with 5,000 euros. We want to repeat the campaign at the end of this year. We also want to organize a few things for the benefit of Alzheimer’s patients.” Sigal wants to do more to fight Alzheimer’s. “Something definitely needs to be done. It should be something like ‘Stand up against Cancer’, but then ‘Stand up against Alzheimer’s’. I hope to one day be able to achieve that, together with the Alzheimer Research Foundation.”
Director Joost Martens of the Alzheimer Research Foundation is very happy with the proceeds from the cupcake campaign. “Every euro we can invest in Alzheimer’s research pays off,” says Martens. “About 70 percent of residents of residential care centers have some form of dementia. This is a brain disorder in which a person slowly but surely deteriorates physically and mentally and eventually becomes completely dependent on the care of others.”
“No medicines”
“About one in seven men and as many as one in three women will develop some form of dementia. There are currently 141,000 people with dementia in Flanders and Brussels. If nothing is done, the number of people with Alzheimer’s in Belgium will almost double in 2046, because there are no medicines available yet. That is why scientific research is necessary,” says Sigal.
The sale of forget-me-not pins from the Alzheimer Research Foundation raised 100,000 euros in December. That money also goes to scientific research. “I am extremely grateful to everyone, because a future without Alzheimer’s has come a little closer,” concludes Peter of the Hugo Sigal foundation.
